It's a truth universally acknowleged that people seem to find British and Irish accents attractive. But what about the variations and nuances of how we speak up and down the country?

A new poll by YouGov has revealed the most and least attractive accents in the UK and Ireland - and some of the results might surprise you.

YouGov surveyed 2,018 adults to rate English and Irish dialects from a scale of very attractive, to very unattractive - and even mapped the results.

Southern Irish topped the list as the most desirable accent to have - followed by 'RP' - ie very posh Received Pronunciation, Welsh, Yorkshire and West Country.

Brummie, Mancunian and Liverpudlian were decreed the least sexy accents out of the 12 choices, according to those surveyed. But obviously a taste for accents varies from person to person. One person's love of a Scottish lilt can contrast with another's 'thing' for guys from Wales. And the Liverpool Echo have responded to the results in the best way - encouraging locals to fight back about why Liverpudlian can be very attractive indeed.
