We’ve only just recovered from the great prosecco shortage of summer 2016 and now we're being told that we could be facing a wine drought.
According to CNN, global wine production is set to fall five percent this year - making it one of the worst years for wine this century.
And who’s to blame for this catastrophic news you ask? Experts say it’s due to climate change as head of the International Organization of Vine and Wine Jean-Marie Aurand told Reuters, "With global warming, we're witnessing an increase in exceptional events that are more frequent, longer lasting and of greater scale."
Huge wine shortages are expected in Chile and Argentina, areas renowned for Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. The news comes following unusually heavy rain brought on by the El Niño climate pattern.
So what does this mean for our Netflix binge Sundays accompanied with a glass of red? Well, if the great shortage of 2012 is anything to go by, we could face a drop in almost 300 million cases of wine. Blimey.
