It’s been a tough few months for women – it’s not a great start to the year when a man who thinks it’s fine to grab us by the pussies takes over one of the world’s most important roles. If you’re feeling defeated, here are some simple ways to help women and girls who have experienced sexual violence. Let’s take the power back.

**1. Support and promote Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence Awareness Week **

It’s running until Sunday, and its organisers would love you to raise the issue of sexual abuse and use the hashtag #itsnotok. If you want to meet up with like-minded supporters, find an event here

**2. Wear your support on your sleeve **

Shopaholics, rejoice, you can now do good for women by whipping out your credit card and buying a SASVW wristband or tote bag here.

3. Know the stats

It’s shocking, but one in every five 16-59 year-old women has been affected by sexual violence, and the numbers keep climbing. It’s not a nice conversation, but it’s an important one, so keep that in your mental fact box next time you’re stuck in a rubbish dinner party when someone says certain girls are ‘asking for it’.

4. Lend an ear

If you know a friend or relative who’s been raped or abused, the best thing you can possibly do for them is to listen without judgement. The feeling that they can safely unburden their worries, without being shamed or blamed, is invaluable.

5. Support your local Rape Crisis Centre

Whether it’s by volunteering (I’ve volunteered for a while at the Peterborough Rape Crisis Care Group and I’ve met some amazing people and learnt so much about female resilience) raising money or just following their social media accounts. Find your local centre here.

6. Put your money where your heart is

Donate to Rape Crisis England and Wale. Text RCEW11 £5 or £10 to 70070 to make a quick donation. Bask in your glory all day long.
