Ryan Gosling Oscars

Cast your minds back to 26 February 2017. The day we all watched on as possibly one of the most awkward awards ceremony cock-ups took place at the 89th Academy Awards.

YUP. La La Land was incorrectly awarded the Oscar for Best Picture instead of the actual winner, Moonlight, and nobody really knew what to do with themselves.

Blocked it out from your memory 'cos it's too cringe-worthy to deal with? Well, allow us to recap:

Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were on stage and ready to announce the winner for Best Picture. It was down to Warren to open the envelope, and if you watch back, he did take a particularly long time to process what was written on the card before passing it to Faye to read out.

Maybe he knew something wasn't right at this point?

Then the whole La La Land cast and crew assembled on stage to collect their award and it all went downhill from there really. Everyone was left pretty stunned when La La Land's producer Justin Horowitz took to the mic and declared that in actual fact they had lost and Moonlight had won – having to repeat several times: "This is not a joke."

It's almost too painful to watch.

Warren then steps up to explain why the wrong name was read out. He says: "I opened the envelope and it said: Emma Stone – La La Land. That's why I took such a long look at Faye."

(See the full goings on here.)

At the time Ryan Gosling's reaction was, in a word, meme-worthy.

THAT CHEEKY SMILE. OUR HEARTS!

Anyway, Ryan has now spoken out and explained his slightly awkward / loveably cheeky reaction to Oscar-gate and it makes a lot of sense.

Speaking in an interview at the Adobe Summit, he explained: "I was watching people start to have this panicked reaction in the crowd and guys were coming on with headsets and I felt like someone had been hurt.

"I thought there was some kind of medical situation, and I had this worst case scenario playing out in my head.

"And then I just heard 'Oh, Moonlight won' and I was so relieved that I started laughing."

TBF, we had a bit of a chuckle here at heat HQ, too.

Ryan also admitted he was actually happy Moonlight had won.

"It's such a ground breaking film, made for a million dollars, an incredible achievement and I'm so happy for them that they were being recognized."

WHAT A GENT.
