Sarah Harding has credited her friends with saving her after she found herself in a “toxic relationship”.

The former Girls Aloud star checked into rehab in South Africa in 2011 where she was treated for an alcohol dependency and depression.

The star has also previously revealed she was hooked on sleeping pills and says she drank to escape the breakdown of her relationship to her ex, DJ Tom Crane.

Former Popstars: The Rivals contestant Sarah said her life fell apart when Tom jetted off to Ibiza and left her at home just six months before they were due to get married.

Opening up about her troubles to fellow Celebrity Big Brother housemate Paul Danan soon after they entered the reality television house last night, Sarah said: “I think a lot of my issues were down to being in a toxic relationship.

“For me it just stems completely from being hurt. Six months before I was due to get married, it all just tumbled around me.

“And I had to front everything and he f*cked off to Ibiza. I had nothing and I felt like I lost my family, my friends that we built for five years and I felt that I had no-one left that I could turn to.

“I was very, very lonely and I just kind of, you know, I had a few good select friends who helped save me from myself, who I am so grateful for.

“They are still good friends but I don’t get to see them very often.”

She added: “I am very much a private person. So, for this (Celebrity Big Brother), it’s quite overwhelming to do this, but I just go so sick of people labelling me, still, after all this time.”

Celebrity Big Brother continues tonight on Channel 5 at 9pm.
