This Harry Potter fan theory about Snape has BLOWN. OUR. MINDS.

Prepare to BAWL

Snape

We have just about got over the trauma of the whole Severus Snape – Lily Potter saga (we only cry some nights now), but a fan theory has just thrown a spanner the size of a bloody basilisk in the works.

Snape

Remember in the book (or the film if you're one of those) when Snape asks Harry the following tricky question to catch him out in his first potions lesson: "Tell me, what would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?"

Nothing more to that than a man with a deep rooted hatred of Harry trying to humiliate him in front of his peers, right?

WRONG.

That's what Tumblr user tomhiddles (TOM HIDDLESTON, IS THAT YOU?) thinks, anyway. He's come up with a pretty darn convincing theory that there's waaaay more to the story.

He wrote the following:

"The first thing Snape asks Harry is 'Potter! What would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?'

"According to Victorian Flower Language, asphodel is a type of lily meaning 'My regrets follow you to the grave' and wormwood means 'absence' and also typically symbolised bitter sorrow. If you combined that, it meant 'I bitterly regret Lily's death'."

WE CANNOT DEAL RN.

Also – we now can't stop picturing Tom Hiddleston pouring obsessively over a Victorian Flower Language book surrounded by Harry Potter merchandise.

Just us?

This is even more emosh than those early Harry Potter sketches J.K Rowling released…

So early, in fact, that Dean Thomas was called Gary.

It's pretty much universally acknowledged that she is the absolute queen of everything – writing, taking down Twitter trolls, formulating complex magical worlds that childhoods will be spent immersed in while she's sat on a train etc etc.

And it turns out she's a pretty mean drawer too.
