Could it really be true? Did Ed Sheeran… do something wrong?

Planet earth's sweetheart played the closing night of Glastonbury and as Ed took to the main stage with nothing more than his trusty guitar to play his countless hits to thousands of people…. it may… brace yourselves… have fallen flat.

People took to Twitter to express their disappointment at the 'empty stage' where Ed looked 'dwarfed' against the enormous space and was left looking daunted playing to such a large audience without the support of a band.

@adventure the stage is awfully empty at @edsheeran tonight... Some side of stage packages might help #justsayin— Kristina (@k_rosenk) June 18, 2015

Some even went as far as to accuse Ed of 'cheating' and using a backing track.

However, it soon surfaced that many people didn’t seem to know what a loop pedal was, (we didn't either) which layers vocals and guitar on top of one another.

The Thinking Out Loud singer hit back at critics in a tweet, advising them to google what a loop station was and confirming everything in the performance was indeed live.

Never thought I'd have to explain it, but everything I do in my live show is live, it's a loop station, not a backing track. Please google x— Ed Sheeran (@edsheeran) June 26, 2017

Don't worry Ed, we believe you!

There were also rumours flying that his long-term BFF Taylor Swift would be joining him for a duet, but he chose to keep the stage for himself.

Was this a threat from TayTay to upstage her public enemy #1 Katy Perry who crowd surfed the Glastonbury crowd during her set the previous day?

Taylor Swift

We'd like to think so.

For a man that can do no wrong, it comes as a surprise that there was so much backlash to his performance.

But people take the annual festival VERY seriously.

There has been a lot of divided opinion in recent years over more commerical solo artists taking to the infamous Pyramid stage such as Adele, Kanye West and even Beyoncé (we know right, who would dare speak ill of the Queen?!)

Hey, you can't please them all!
