Zayn Malik's opened up about the eating disorder he battled at the height of One Direction's fame; explaining it was all about 'control' as his day-to-day life was so 'regimented.'

Admitting it was his mum Trisha who helped him overcome his issue with some 'TLC' (presumably not blasting No Scrubs round the house) and home-cooked food, Zayn got well candid with The Sunday Times' Style magazine.

Speaking to the mag, Zayn explained: "It was a control thing.

"Every area of my life was so regimented and controlled it was the one area where I could say, ‘No, I’m not eating that’.

“Once I got over the control, the eating just came back into place, super naturally.

"I came back to the UK and spent some time with my mum and got some TLC, and she cooked me food and I got back in touch, mentally, with a lot of the things I’d lost.

"I now have no problem with anxiety. It was something I was dealing with in the band."

Zayn also revealed he's found relationships pre-Gigi Hadid difficult, saying: "Love hurts. Love is hard. Maybe my experiences of love up to writing that album were new and hard."

Zayn first addressed his eating disorder in his book ZAYN last year, writing: "Something I've never talked about in public before, but which I have come to terms with since leaving the band, is that I was suffering from an eating disorder.

"I'd just go for days - sometimes two or three days straight - without eating anything at all.

"It got quite serious, although at the time I didn't recognise it for what it was."
