Zayn Malik and Niall Horan had an AWKS meeting at the AMAs

The handshake is TOO MUCH

We knew this day was coming.

We've been anticipating an award ceremony encounter between the two former One Direction band mates ever since they both went off to launch their own solo careers.

But we didn’t expect it to be this, well, bloody awkward.

And we didn't expect it to come around so soon.

We were busy mentally preparing ourselves for the People's Choice Awards, where Zayn Malik and Niall Horan are both up for the SAME award.

But, alas, the former band mates came face to face at the American Music Awards and it was nothing like we had expected.

We had high hopes for the boys embracing in a warm hug, re-creating their former on-stage chemistry and making us forget all this nasty Zayn leaving / One Direction hiatus business.

However, we were sorely disappointed with the reality.

The hugely anticipated reunion came down to a fleeting handshake with approximately 0.000001 nanoseconds of Zayn-Niall contact time.

Luckily someone caught the moment on camera.

But watch closely 'cos if you blink, you'll miss it.

Seriously.

What does this mean?

Was it really, really awkward?

Was there tension? Was Niall a bit peeved by [Zayn's One Direction snub](planetradio.co.uk/heat/celebrity/news/zayn-throws-subtle-shade-one-direction-amas/

)?

Or was it just a really busy night and the boys could only schedule in 12.3 seconds for a little catch up?

Is this REALLY what 5 years of melting the hearts of girls all over the world comes down to?

We literally can't imagine how high up the awkward scale the People's Choice Awards will be now.

Can't we all just go back to happier times?

Zayn and Niall

PLEASE.
