There was a moment of sadness amongst the rock and roll excess of last night's NME Awards.

The show, held at the Brixton Academy, London, was dedicated to both David Bowie, who was born in Brixton, and Viola Beach.

The band, Kris Leonard, River Reeves, Tomas Lowe and Jack Dakin, and their manager, Craig Tarry, were killed in Sweden on Saturday 13 February when their car plunged 80ft off a bridge.

On Monday 15 February, their debut single Swings & Waterslides entered the Official Singles Chart at Number 39.

Mike Williams, NME editor, urged the audience at the NME Awards show to buy the band's single and get them to Number One.

The final position of the Viola Beach single will be confirmed tomorrow.
