We don't know quite how to break this to you, but life's about to change for the worse and there's very little we can do about it. As if the loss of Love Island and potential end of Walkers salt and vinegar crisps wasn't enough, we're now going to have to PAY to have our Subway sandwiches toasted. Cold, hard cash. Real life money.

It doesn't even bear thinking about.

So basically back in 2012 George Osbourne rocked the nation as he introduced a 20% VAT charge on hot takeaway food. You may remember it was deemed 'pastygate' and did not go down well with the masses. So much so it was scrapped, with a tax then put on hot sandwiches instead.

Having absolutely none of it and protesting the charge, Subway even went as far as to rebrand their products 'hot bread sandwiches' just so customers could keep that extra bit of cash.

But it seems they've now caved, and we're all now expected to cough up the tax if we fancy our sub toasted. Unbelievable.

In a statement addressing the controversial move, a Subway spokesperson said: "Since changes to VAT in 2012 (the pasty tax) Subway has repeatedly tried to challenge the law in order to protect the customer.

"Subway franchisees have been absorbing the VAT cost, charging a single price for food, whether hot or cold or eat-in or take-away."

Just to give this some context, prices of a 6-inch (OI OI) have already increased by 95p-£1.05; and customers ain't happy.

One DISGRUNTLED SANDWICH LOVER took to Twitter to say: "Can't believe subway now charge an extra quid to get your food toasted."

While another was all like: "Hows subway going to charge extra to toast your sub r they ok x"

No, Chloe. They are not OK.
