If you have one or more of any of the following: access to the internet, a Netflix account, a pair of ears – you’ve probably heard of 13 Reasons Why.
The Netflix show has been a massive hit with viewers, and has opened up a huge conversation on the subjects of suicide, mental health and sexual assault.
It was recently revealed that the show will be renewed for a second season – producer Selena Gomez wrote on Instagram: “Their story isn’t over. Season 2 of #13ReasonsWhy is coming.”
For more information and gossip on season two, click here, but all we know for sure about the storyline of the new series is that many of the same cast (including Katherine Langford as Hannah Baker) will star.
So we looked to the internet for theories. Cos we're very impatient.
13 Reasons Why Season 2 theory one: The school shooting
By far the biggest cliff-hanger of season one was photographer Tyler’s collection of guns, coupled with the room of hanging photographs of his peers.
The most prominent theory, then, is that series 2 will feature a school shooting.
Reddit user tamara1781 suggested that each of the 13 episodes would, in a similar style to the first, tell the story of a different character – but this time each of the victims of the shooting.
So instead of tapes as in season one, it would be framed according to the photographs.
“The lawsuit will garner further publicity, but consider that the school has failed to prevent two suicides happening (or, at least, one suicide and another suicide attempt), even though so much laws or guidelines are in place, the school at this point will fail to prevent a mass shooting. They preferred to paint over walls instead of taking action against bullying, and this is just another characteristic of negligence, i guess”.
13 Reasons Why Season 2 theory two: Alex becomes the main character
The last season saw Alex taken away in an ambulance after being shot in the head in what was presumably an attempted suicide.
Some fans are now wondering whether this means he’ll take over from Hannah Baker as the central character after surviving the suicide attempt.
Reddit user BigRed160 suggested: "I think [Alex] is going to survive but in a heavily problematic way (vegetative state, speech problems, paralysis, something like that) in order to continue addressing suicide but from a new perspective..."
Miles Heizer, who plays Alex in the show, hinted this could be the way the season would go while speaking to The Hollywood Reporter.
He said: "That's another subject that's very rarely shown onscreen and is probably a lot more common than people think it is. People attempting to take their lives and it not happening, I'm sure that will bring a crazy set of issues.
"It would be interesting to go into that."
13 Reasons Why season two theory 3: The Sliding Doors theory
Some fans have suggested that series 2 could focus on what would have happened if Hannah had got help and not committed suicide.
Reddit User sill8 suggested: "Jay Asher just so happened to release a 10th Anniversary version of the book where Hannah doesn't actually die at the end, which came out only a few months before the series did. So what if Season 1 is one reality where no one steps in to help Hannah and she dies, but Season 2 explores what could have happened if she got the help she needed and lived?"
We’re guessing this one’s not looking likely, as it would take away from season one’s message (but we’re big fans of the idea of Hannah getting a happy ending!)
13 Reasons Why season 2 theory 4: Bryce avoids jail
As season one was drawing to a close, it looked like Bryce was finally about to get his comeuppance.
It ended with Jessica telling her dad she’d been raped, and Brian Yorkey (and literally everyone else) is keen to see Bryce punished.
"I want to do Jessica’s story the deserved justice of following her as she goes back to school, as she tries to begin to recover from what happened to her, because it’s something that millions of young women go through. And also [I want to] see somebody punch Bryce in the face."
But Reddit user tamara1781 has suggested justice won’t be served in series 2.
“We don't know for sure if Bryce goes to jail, considering he has very influential parents. Remember Brock Turner? He was a rapist but had a slap-on-the-wrist sentencing and was eventually freed. I have a feeling this story will just mirror reality. My guess is that Bryce either will serve a very short time, or none at all.”
