Christmas is fast approaching – this time of year is all about drinking a few bubbles, stuffing your face full of mince pies and swimming in the millions of presents you receive. Oh, and the Baby Jesus.

During this period of happiness, the last thing we need is something to bring us down and make us all grumpy.

So it’s lucky a scene, so dark it could have turned out all lights forever, was pulled from last night’s Luther.

The gritty show has returned for a two-part special and actor Idris Elba revealed a part of the programme looking at John Luther’s troubled ways was removed.

He said at a press conference: “It was a very dark, deep sequence that explained some things that are floating around in Luther’s head.

“We shot it and cut it and put it in… and had to take it out.

“It was a psychological expression of John. The audience would have said, ‘I wanted to get to know him, but Jesus – is that what’s going on in his head?’ – and so we axed it.”

Despite its dark feel, Idris would have like it to remain in the episode and even sees playing the troubled character as “therapy”.

He said: “I always go to Luther when I’m at my grumpiest – if I feel like s**t, it’s time to play some Luther!

“I use John Luther as a little bit of a therapy session – and I think it’s that for [writer] Neil Cross as well. We both use it as a cathartic experience."
