The imminent Comic Relief Love Actually sequel has arguably been the standout news of the year, and the fact that It will feature Hugh Grant, Martine McCutcheon, Keira Knightley, Andrew Lincoln, Colin Firth, Lucia Moniz, Liam Neeson, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Olivia Olson, Bill Nighy, Marcus Brigstocke, and Rowan Atkinson has got us so excited.

But most people have been a bit upset that national treasure and all-round bae Emma Thompson, who provided the original film's perhaps most emotional storyline, wasn't on the list.

She's now revealed why, and it's making us really, really sad.

Alan Rickman – who played her adulterous husband Harry in the film – passed away last year, and Emma has said that she thinks the sequel is arriving too soon after his death.

Speaking to PA about why she won't be in it, she said: "It's too soon. It's absolutely right because it's supposed to be for Comic Relief but there isn't much comic relief in the loss of our dear friend really only just over a year ago.

"We thought and thought but it just seemed wrong but to revisit the wonderful fun characters of Bill Nighy and Hugh Grant and Liam (Neeson) and all of that, that's fantastic but obviously what would he have done?"

Writer and director Richard Curtis also recently described how it would be complicated to deal with Alan's death in the film, and admitted that there wasn't time to look into all characters' lives.

"You know dealing with Alan is very complicated so not really," he told PA. "We're not doing everyone. We're doing about two thirds of people."

Comic Relief Actually will air during the Red Nose Day broadcast of Comic Relief on March 24 on BBC1.
