Love Actually has become a Christmas classic that always leaves us feeling warm and fuzzy inside.
But we’ve always had some unanswered questions when it comes to the plot – like did Harry really sleep with that naughty receptionist of his?
Luckily, script writer Emma Freud took to Twitter recently to answer a few questions while her husband Richard Curtis, who was also the film’s director, had his first cinema experience of the movie.
The character of Harry (Alan Rickman) was seen getting close to his secretary Mia (Heike Makatsch) on screen while he was married to Karen (Emma Thompson).
Karen finds a piece of jewellery, which she assumes Harry has bought her for Christmas, but when she doesn’t receive the gift she finds out he’s been seeing another woman.
Tweeting script writer Emma, one fan asked: “Can you please explain the outcome for Emma and Alan’s characters or must I remain eternally confused? I never did work that one out!”
She replied: “They stay together but home isn’t as happy as it once was.”
Karen and Harry, who have two children together, share an awkward kiss when they meet at the airport in time for New Year.
So the couple had a lot to work on after getting back together as Emma clarified the exact nature of Harry’s relationship with Mia.
One follower pondered: “Did anyone ask if Harry ACTUALLY had an affair or was just tempted to? Alan Rickman villains are usually lovable but not this one!”
Emma responded: “DEFINITELY had an affair. I begged Richard just to make it a flirtation, but no. The whole way.”
The character of Rufus, a jewellery salesman played by Rowan Atkinson, attempts to wrap the gift for Mia unusually securely, which caused some confusion with viewers, but Emma clarified the reason behind this.
She tweeted: “Originally Rowan’s character over-wrapped the gift on purpose to stop Alan Rickman being able to buy the necklace. Because he was an angel.”
