There are many things in life that are destined to remain a mystery to us: string theory, dragon fruit, the continued popularity of Stephen Bear.
But one mystery has (at last) been cleared up. The eternal mystery of how much Love Island contestants get paid to appear on the show.
We have always wondered how does their rent get paid when they’re on the show? Do they all quit their jobs beforehand? How long can one live on ropey nightclub PAs and #spon posts?
And we’re glad to answer at least part of that. The contestants get paid to appear….
"A contribution towards living their costs while they are on the show," as an ITV insider put it to us.
They get free food and accommodation and condoms though, so – winning?
And there’s always a shot at the sweet £50,000 prize, or £25,000 if the winner chooses to share it with their partner. The way this series is going, they are a mug if they do.
And once the brand-new celebs have left the villa, all manner of new opportunities present themselves, of course.
Nathan Massey and Cara de la Hoyde appeared in Towie.
Olivia Buckland has a swimwear range.
They all get a lovely free holiday though. And that’s quite something.
We have contacted ITV for comment.
Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2.
