The Only Way Is Essex legend Nanny Pat has passed away at the age of 80.

The reality star - who was the grandmother of cast members Mark and Jessica Wright and mother to Carol Wright - died after a short illness.

A statement from the Wright family read: “Sadly our amazing, courageous and beautiful Nanny Pat passed away this morning after a short illness.

“We are overwhelmed by sadness, and the whole family ask for privacy at this horrible time.”

Pat has been on the show since the first series when it started on ITV2 in 2010 and was seen bringing grandson Mark a sausage plait at his flat.

She was known for her funny one-liners and for offering the younger stars of the show - who have since paid tribute - advice.

The television star celebrated her 80th birthday last month in Surrey where she had a Royal Wedding-themed party.

At the celebration she remembered her late husband Charlie, who she used to carry a photograph of around in her purse.

Granddaughter Jess gave her a framed picture of him and Nanny Pat could be seen becoming emotional at the bash, which was filmed for TOWIE.

With tears streaming down her face, she joked: “He’s everywhere. Thank you, Jess. That’s really lovely.”

Pat’s daughter Carol said of her mother at the party: “This little old lady puts everyone first and never asks for anything in return – apart from a packet of candy!”

The oldest cast member of the show almost did not appear on the ITVBe series as she said she wanted to watch her family on it instead.

She said of her husband: “It’s a shame that my Charlie wasn’t around to see us all on television. He wouldn’t believe it, but it’s really lovely.”

Pat grew up during the war in the East End of London which suffered the Blitz before working at the Tate & Lyle sugar factory in Canning Town.

She was mother to five children, and had 14 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
