We don’t know about you, but we have about 30,000 group chats on WhatsApp (of which about 29,999 are Love Island related), so when we discovered there was a scam going around, we just HAD to let you know.
Apparently, the app have had to issue a warning to their users, after fraudsters managed to wangle bank details off hundreds of unsuspecting Brits, by telling them their WhatsApp ‘trial subscription’ was coming to an end.
Eeeek.
According to The Mirror, victims were sent a message from an account posing as WhatsApp, saying: “Our records indicate that your WhatsApp trial service is exceeding the one-year period.
“At the completion of your trial period your WhatsApp will no longer be able to send or receive message [sic].
“To continue using WhatsApp without interuption [sic], we need you to subscribe for any of our subscription periods.”
The message then encourages users to travel to the ‘customer portal’ where it asks them to put in their phone number and sign in.
WhatsApp did once charge a small subscription fee, but it hasn’t since the company was bought by Facebook in 2014.
So, WATCH OUT GUYS!
If you receive this message then make sure you block the sender, so they can no longer communicate with you.
