heat's office, the internet and basically the whole world were absolutely blindsided by the news that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie had filed for divorce last year.

After a long and sometimes unpleasant custody battle, Angelina won sole custody of the couple's six children - Maddox, 15, Zahara, 11, Shiloh, 10, Pax, 12 and eight-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne.

And now, Brad – who removed himself from the limelight for the majority of last year – has given his first interview since the split. And guess what? It's candid af.

Speaking to GQ Style about life since their separation and insistingthat they are now working together on the custodial terms of their divorce settlement.

Addressing his current family situation, Brad admitted that both him and Angelina are doing their best to sort it all out: "We're both doing our best. I heard one lawyer say, “No one wins in court—it's just a matter of who gets hurt worse.” And it seems to be true, you spend a year just focused on building a case to prove your point and why you're right and why they're wrong, and it's just an investment in vitriolic hatred.

I just refuse. And fortunately my partner in this agrees. It's just very, very jarring for the kids, to suddenly have their family ripped apart."

The 53-year-old also touched upon his unhealthy relationship with booze and drugs and suggested that his "self-inflicted" struggles may have led to their split.

"I do remember a few spots along the road where I've become absolutely tired of myself. And this is a big one. These moments have always been a huge generator for change. And I'm quite grateful for it. But me, personally, I can't remember a day since I got out of college when I wasn't boozing or had a spliff, or something. Something.

"And you realize that a lot of it is, um—cigarettes, you know, pacifiers. And I'm running from feelings. I'm really, really happy to be done with all of that. I mean I stopped everything except boozing when I started my family. But even this last year, you know—things I wasn't dealing with. I was boozing too much. It's just become a problem."

Brad, who was photographed looking BEAUTIFUL in various stunning rural locations by photographer Ryan McGinley admitted that 'family is first' over everything else.

"Family first. People on their deathbeds don't talk about what they obtained or were awarded. They talk about their loved ones or their regrets."

Touché.
