Lady Gaga credits American Horror Story role for helping her depression

She says the show, and upcoming film role, are helping her battle mental illness

Lady Gaga has thanked her role in* American Horror Story* for helping her battle mental illness.

The singer, real name Stefani Germanotta, has revealed she's been taking medication for depression and anxiety for years but has credited her recent role in the hit TV show for helping her with her issues.

She told The Sun on Sunday: ‘I’m an actress now and that helps a lot.

‘I’ve tried to get off [my medication], but my doctor always tells me not to, that it's not safe for me.

‘I’ve tried a lot of things but there is something about acting that has really helped. I'm a Stefani-Gaga hybrid and I want you to know the real me.’

She also revealed that she was so nervous on her first day on set that she sick in her Rolls-Royce car! She added: ‘I was very nervous. All I have is my preparation time and Jesus to save me from possibly screwing this up.’

Gaga is currently starring in American Horror Story: Hotel alongside Angela Basset, Kathy Bates and Sarah Paulson. The show recently confirmed it will be returning for a sixth season.
