Taylor Swift returns to Spotify as Katy Perry releases new album

Coincidence?

Taylor Swift

Look, we don't wanna speculate and the two events could be completely unrelated, but Taylor Swift's finally ended her feud with music streaming service Spotify the same day Katy Perry releases her new album Witness.

Now obviously the pair have some bad blood we can't even go into fully right now (more on that here); and fans think it's pretty coincidental Taylor's made her entire back catalogue available just as Katy chucks out some new tunes.

Basically, Taylor pitched the whole thing like so:

Releasing a statement thanking fans for their support of her 1989 record, Taylor's people said: "In celebration of 1989 selling over 10 Million Albums Worldwide and the RIAA's 100 Million Song Certification announcement, Taylor wants to thank her fans by making her entire back catalog available to all streaming services tonight at midnight."

So what's the back story? Well, back in 2014 TayTay wrote an opinion piece for the Great Wall Street Journal explaining her view that music should be paid for in a bid to truly value the artist and all that malarkey.

What's changed, exactly? Who knows, but loads of people reckon it might have something to do with Katy's new album release. One tweeted: "I aspire to be as petty as taylor swift releasing her discography for streaming the weekend katy perry's album drops."

Others are skeptical, though, with one Taylor fan saying: "katy called us “little girls" taylor wanted to thank her “little girls” for having her sell 100M songs by putting her music on spotify."

A Spotify spokesperson adds: "We can confirm that Taylor Swift’s entire back catalogue is now available on Spotify for her millions of fans to enjoy."

This all comes as Katy Perry tells NME Taylor tried to 'assassinate' her character. She spilled: "I’m not Buddha – things irritate me. I wish that I could turn the other cheek every single time, but I’m also not a pushover, you know? Especially when someone tries to assassinate my character with little girls. That’s so messed up."

THE JURY'S OUT.
