The X Factor viewers were sent into a tizzy on Sunday night when it appeared that Matt Terry and Freddy Parker kissed following his win. The kiss appeared to justify months of speculation that the two were a couple.

Fans of the show were convinced they had seen the pair lock lips, with one tweeting:

"Very glad #MattTerry won #XFactor well deserved and did I see him kiss @FreddyParker98 at the end I do hope so!!"

Another added: "Matt and Freddy are definitely a couple, after that hug from behind and that kiss! #xfactorfinal #XFactor #XFactorUK2016 #mattterry"

Alas, the romance was all in our heads as Matt Terry told Dan Wootton for The Sun:

"I don’t know what this is about. Freddy is my little brother, we hit it off straight away. Since day one, we are just bros man. We have such a bromance going – no relationship I’m afraid guys, I’m sorry to say. Sorry man."

He then joked: "No I don’t think we kissed but he would have been lucky if I did."

Well, what did we expect from the end of 2016 except MORE disappointment?

Despite denying a romance with Freddy, Matt wasn’t so shy about another possible X Factor crush. After Nicole Scherzinger planted a huge kiss on him, he revealed he wasn’t in any rush to wash off her lipstick stains. He said:

"Do you know who did give me a big kiss? I had a big red lipstick from Nicole. The Four of Diamond girls were saying 'You’ve got make up on’ and I was like 'No please leave it on there.'"
